The goal of the The Cancer Research and Education to Advance HealTh Equity (CREATE) Partnership is to further increase SDSU’s cancer research capacities and expand SDSU’s and UCSD’s emphasis on cancer health disparities research.
Through the work of the Outreach Core, our Partnership fostered impactful community-academic partnerships with all 18 Community Health Centers (CHC) in its region.
Our Partnership obtained funding to assess rates of abnormal fecal immunochemical test (FIT) and to characterize colonoscopy referral and completion among 1,229 patients with abnormal FIT from 8 CHCs
We implemented an evidence-based, best practices focused patient navigation program for abnormal FIT follow-up (N=137 patients were navigated, and the abnormal FIT follow-up rate improved by 17% (from 25% to 42%)
Our Partnership provided no-cost colonoscopies for uninsured patients in collaboration with UCSD’s Colon Health Program. In the past year alone, 15 patients have been referred.
